What is Hypnobirthing and is it Halal?
Hypnobirthing is a gentle approach to preparing for birth, combining good antenatal education with breathing, relaxation, guided visualisation and positive affirmations. These techniques can help you feel calmer, more confident and better able to navigate the sensations of labour.
The word “hypno” comes from the Greek word hypnos, meaning sleep. Despite what you may currently think, hypnobirthing is not ‘hypnosis’ or ‘stage hypnosis’. You are not unconscious or made to lose control - you remain fully aware and in control of your mind, body and choices. The aim is simply to help you reach a deeply relaxed state, which may sometimes feel so peaceful that you fall asleep.
So, is hypnobirthing halal? Yes! The techniques themselves are simply relaxation and birth preparation tools. At Crescent Moon, they are taught within an Islamic framework, with no shirk, ‘spiritual energies’ or attribution of power to anything other than Allah. Instead, we incorporate tawakkul - taking the means available to us while placing all of our trust in Allah.
My aim is to help Muslim women approach birth feeling informed, calm, prepared and supported, with the reassurance that they can prepare themselves as best they can while trusting Allah with the outcome.
